The date behind the celebration

Canada Day takes place on July 1. Canadian Heritage provides information on activities across the country, alongside background on the holiday. Its history page records that the name Canada Day officially replaced Dominion Day on October 27, 1982.

Start with the local programme

For a visit, begin with the host community’s event listing. Use the published location, time and access information rather than assuming that an image or last year’s schedule describes this year’s celebration. A national holiday can have many local programmes.

Make room for the day

Our editorial suggestion: choose one activity you would most like to attend, then leave space around it. Agree on a meeting point with your companions and check the organiser’s updates before leaving. The photographs accompanying this journal are illustrative; they do not document a specific July 1 event.
